The Brainstem and Cortex

TBA 2025

Designed for managing whiplash injuries and post-concussion symptoms, this module teaches assessment and treatment strategies for conditions like cervicogenic vertigo and TMJ dysfunction. Emphasis is placed on understanding how whiplash affects body mechanics and long-term symptoms, along with treatments such as vestibular rehab and TMJ manual therapy.

Overview

  • The Role of the Brainstem in Descending Pain Inhibition, Autonomic Regulation and Visceral Control

    • How dysfunction can cause chronic (nociplastic) pain, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue.

  • Testing the cranial nerves

    • For pathology and seeing behind each cranial nerve into brainstem function.

  • Assessment of the Medulla, Pons and Mesencephalon

    • Motor and autonomic tracts and their part in migraines.

  • The Neurological Mechanism of Migraines

  • Rehabilitation of the Mesencephalon, Pons and Medulla

    • Trigeminal and vagal neuromodulation, breathing exercises and cold exposure.

  • Migraines, trigeminal neuralgia and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias

    • Rehabilitation options.

  • Supporting neurological rehab for headaches and migraines with nutrition

  • The Lateralized Brain

    • How each hemisphere processes information differently.

  • Hemispheric Imbalance

    • The Consequences.

  • The Prefrontal cortex

    • Executive function and understanding the disorders related to them which are “yellow flags” that slow down recovery.

  • The Frontal Lobes Influence on Pain Inhibition

    • Autonomic and Immune Regulation and Executive Function.

  • The Bigger Picture of Chronic Pain

    • Reconciling functional neurology with the pain science approach.

  • Putting it all together

    • Testing and rehabilitation of the cortex in a manual therapy setting.

    • Combining coordination, balance, timing, visual, auditory and cognitive tasks to improve brain function.
